Adam Gidwitz Visit

Hi! Today I’m going to tell you about Adam Gidwitz visiting our school.

Adam Gidwitz is an author that writes many books for children. He specifically talked about a book based on a man that he knew as a kid. This man was born in Germany. When he was just 10 years old, his parents sent him away to another country so he wouldn’t die because of the war. He didn’t have his parents after that because they stayed in Germany. This book is similar to his story but the kid in the book has 2 voices that speak to him on his shoulders. If you are interested in reading the book, it’s called Max in the House of Spies (This man was a family friend from when he was a kid).

Planting Trees

Hi! Today I’m going to tell you about a field trip my grade took. You probably already know from the title that we were planting trees.  So let me tell you a little bit about it.

First, it was a really fun experience even though it got REALLY messy. My pants were completely covered in mud. It is also really fun to do with a friend. I did it with my friend Lindsey and I learned that this project includes a lot of teamwork.

If you want to see her blog:

Lindsey’s Blog

The first thing we did was find a tree in a pot with soil already in it. Then we found a spot to plant it. Once we found the spot, we started digging a hole about the size of the pot. We had some trouble because we kept on hitting rock and roots so we had to relocate our tree. Once it was deep enough, we took the tree out of the pot and got out some of the extra soil so we could put it in the hole. After we put it in the hole, we covered it with mulch and we were done. We did the same thing in another place so we could have 1 tree to both of us.

Overall, it was the best field trip I’ve had in a while. Thanks for reading! Bye!

My Clay Mug

Hi! Today I’m going to talk a little bit about a project I did in art class. As you can probably tell by the title, we made mugs out of clay.

I learned a lot a lot about clay and clay tools in this class. For this mug we had to add an animal to it. I decided to add a dragon because my dog’s name is Drogon which is from the dragon named Drogon. I also added a lotus which is a flower because my mothers name is Kamala which means lotus in an Indian language. If you’re wondering, yes that is also why the vice president is Kamala. Making clay mugs was interestingly fun. First in class we had the cylinder and bottom to make a cup. Then the next day we added a handle. The day after that we smoothed out the lip and bottom of the mug. Then we started making out animals. something you might not know is that to attach pieces of clay, you have to score the clay which is sort of like taking something spiky and scratching the surface of the clay. Then you add something called slip which is this watery substance with dry clay in it. If you ever use slip, don’t mix it or put in more clay. You’ll hurt the slip. After we added all the clay and finish shaping it, our teacher let the moisture dry out so that she could put it in a kiln. This is a picture of before we put it in the kiln.

After letting it dry, we put the mug into the kiln. The mug came out white because it was really dry and it had no moisture in it. Here is a picture after we took it out.

After that, we glazed them which is basically painting them. Then we put them in the kiln again and we got our finished mug.

My Comic

Hi! Today I’m going to tell you a little bit about my comic book that I made for my language arts class. It all started when we started to read something called wisdom tales. Wisdom tales are short stories that teach you a life lesson. we were required to make a comic. book about one of them. I chose to do The Tiger’s Whisker. I’ll show you some pictures of it and you can read it.

All 4 photos taken by me Kashish.

Thank you for reading this blog and I hope you liked my comic. Bye!

My Mock Meet

A picture from one of our meets taken by another competitor

Hi everybody! Today I going to tell you a little bit about my mock meet.

Incase you are wondering what that even is, a mock meet is a gymnastics competition but, it’s not a real one. It is meant to show gymnasts how an actual meet will go.

In that mock meet I did 4 events. I did vault, bars, beam, and floor.

First off, in vault. In vault I did something called a half-on. A half-on is where I sprint 10 steps and then jump on a spring board to push my hands off of a table and land on the other side of the table.

Now I’m going to talk about bars. In bars, I do a pullover, double back-hip-circle, squat-on, jump to high bar, tap swing, half-turn. Don’t worry. I’ll explain what that is and attach a video. A pullover is where you are on a bar slightly higher than your height. You pull your chin up to the bar and swing your legs over the bar so that the bar is slightly lower than your hips and your holding yourself with your hands. A double back-hip-circle is where you do a cast which is where you push your hips off the bar and keep your hands on the bar and swing under the bar twice. A squat-on is where you push your hips of the bar and jump your feet onto the bar. After I do my squat-on, I jump to high bar by letting go of my hands on the lower bar and balancing on my feet. Then I jump off of that bar and catch the higher bar with my hands. Then I do tap swings. I just swing my body back and forth. Then I turn around and fall to end my bars routine.

Then I went to beam. I did my mount an did a balk-walk-over on the beam. It is where you are standing and then you reach your hands back as you bend your back and kick your legs over to stand back on them. Then I did a cartwheel. I did a split jump and then a full turn. I did a silver dismount which is where I do a handstand and land on the other side of the beam.

Last but not least, I did floor. On floor I did a full turn like on beam then I did my leap pass where I gallop and split in the air and then do a jump where I tuck my knees to my chest. Then I did my round-off-back-hand-spring where I do a cartwheel that sort of lifts you off the ground and then you jump back onto your hands and then land. then I did a front-hand-spring round-off where I run and flip while touching the floor with my hands and do a round off like before.

That’s it for this blog. Thanks for reading.

Thanksgiving

Hi everybody! Today I’m going to tell you a little bit about my Thanksgiving break and what I’m thankful for!

My family didn’t really travel anywhere but on Thanksgiving night, we had dinner at my friend’s house. My mom made some rajma and rice which is an Indian dish. I ate mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese, rajma and rice, and cornbread. I even had a sleepover with my friends 2 days in a row!

The only really exciting thing I did was cut my hair. I wanted to cut it really short so I decided to just donate some hair to a wig company.

(Taken by my mom – Kamala)

I’m thankful for a lot of things. I’m most thankful for :

  1. My mom – My mom always makes sure that I’m okay whether it’s how I’m feeling emotionally or physically. I love to talk to her about all the things going on in my life.
  2. My dog – I love my dog, Drogon, because he is always so playful and mellow. Many people think that he is fierce and aggressive because he’s a big dog but, inside, he’s practically a marshmallow.
  3. My gymnastics teammates – Whenever I fall down or fail something, they will tell me that I’m okay and encourage me to do even better. They will also always cheer on everybody during routines which makes it really hard not to smile.
  4. My gymnastics coaches – I love my coaches because they are always trying to make us better while also understanding that if we are having a bad day, we can’t do everything. They’ll stop us and give us a hug. They will always make an unbreakable bond since the day you show up to a gym.
  5. My school friends – My school friends are awesome because they always find a way to entertain me and make me laugh.
  6. My best friend – My best friend, Anaya, has always been my best friend. Even when I moved from California to NC. Whenever i’m feeling sad, I can always call her and I instantly feel better.
  7. My house – I love my house because it provides me with a roof over my head every night. I have a room all to myself and THANKFULLY, unlike our old house, a bathroom to myself (I had to share a bathroom with my brother when we lived in California).
  8. My school – I’m so happy that my family can afford private school. There are so many other kids in the world that don’t have access to a great school like I do.
  9. The Cheesecake Factory – Cheesecakes are awesome. If you go there, get the Oreo Dream Cheesecake. The steak is good too.  It may seem gross but, dip the steak into the mashed potatoes.
  10. My math tutor – My math tutor makes sure that I can catch up to my class while also being ahead of my math class. She has been with my brother and I for a couple of years and is so nice.

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving break. Bye!

My Dog’s Birthday

Hi everybody! Today I’m going to tell you a small story that happened over my dog’s birthday! I’m not going to talk about it too much though.

(Taken by me – Kashish)

He turned 4 years old on November 12. Since it was also Diwali, we gave him an Indian sweet called kesari peda. It is an orange sweet that tastes so good. Since my mom really wanted photos, my older brother held our dog while I held the sweet. My mom put a candle in the middle and lit it on fire. Drogon is named after the dragon from The Game of Thrones. My mom really liked the name so now we think of him and a strong dragon. He is a big dog with a big appetite. When my brother let go of him, Drogon the dragon WENT for it! He went straight to the treat and ate the fire before we could blow it out. He was fine after but I don’t think he liked the taste of fire.

We also went on a big walk with him and he had fun exploring the woods. He was so curious and it took so much time for us to try and get him to stop sniffing everything.

Thanks! Hope you liked reading this!

Halloween

Hi everyone! Today I’m going to write a little bit about Halloween and you might even learn something new and cool!

First off, Halloween is the one day a year that dead spirits can come back to visit Earth. So be careful because there could be a ghost in your bedroom right now! Halloween was meant to celebrate the Celtic New Year. Celts made bonfires and wore costumes to ward of ghosts and evil spirits. They made the Celtic New Year a day to celebrate and welcome their ancestors’ spirits. It then became a day where we celebrate all spirits visitiing Earth.

A nice tradition that we have for Halloween is Trick-or-Treating! My personal favorite candy is the watermelon jollyrancher. What’s yours? Only a few days ago did I find out that there was a mango jollyrancher! Did you know that? Another fun tradition is dressing up! Whatever costume that you have on for 2023 Halloween is probably really cool.

While I did not dress up this year, so many of my friends dressed up in such cool costumes from videogame, movies, and even books! The awesome costumes came with funny accesories and duos! It was pretty fun to help hand out candy because I got a lot of leftover candy! Not many people trick-or-treated in out neighborhood because it was REALLY

That’s it for today and I hope you had a SPOOKY Halloween!

Diwali

Hi everybody! Today I’m going to write about Diwali.

Diwali is an Indian holiday that is celebrated with many traditions. Some traditions that I celebrated are rangoli, diyas, and more!

At home, I did rangoli with my dad. We put designs all over our front porch. We had 2 different kind of designs with stencils in white color. Rangoli welcomes the goddess of wealth or Godess Lakshmi as well as good luck and more into your home.  We also lit diyas and they were super pretty in the dark. Diyas are like little candles that you light to show the goodness in the world. Diwali show the light in the world and how goodness always win over evil. Here are some pictures.

(Taken by my brother – Kanishk)

Another thing that my brother and I did was light a miniature firecracker sort of thing. We lit it with a sparkler which crackles of fire sparks. It was fun to do with the neon sparklers. Once we lit the mini firecracker, it was SUPER big and colorful. It was so much fun to experience.

Over everything we did and everything we ate, it was so much fun to celebrate this year and I can’t wait to celebrate next year. Thanks so much for reading!

My Birthday Weekend

Hi everybody! Today I’m going to tell you a little bit about my birthday weekend and what I did!

First off, I had a party with my friends at TRC (Triangle Rock Club). Then we brought my friends home for a sleep over.

At the Triangle Rock Club, we did lots of rockclimbing and even did it BLINDFOLDED! The room that we were in had different colored rocks to climb and each color had a different level. For example, I tried the grey rocks which were a level 5.11. All of the levels in the room were in the 5s. The supervisors said that kids around our age were expected to do levels like 5.8. My friends and I tried multiple times but didn’t get all the way up. We got pretty far though. There was another one where we were able to climb onto a platform after climbing to the top. My friends and I did the blindfolded challenge where we were able to climb blindfolded with the guidence of our friends!

After that fun experience with rock climbing, we got to play gaga ball!  It was fun because there was so many people playing and we used the whole room. The room was different than a normal gaga ball pit so it was a change that was also fun. We did a couple rounds and then went inside the party room to eat some snacks.

Then a bunch of my friends came over to my house for a sleepover! We mostly ate mac n cheese and chicken alfredo. It was really yummy! We played a bunch of games like hide and seek, among us, mafia, poison dart frog, and more! My friends and I had so much fun laughing and playing games.

That’s it for today. Thanks!
